This page will contain a brief history of Italy at the time Moore visited it in 1819.

It will discuss the impact of the Napoleonic conquest of Italy in 1797, his reorganisation of Italian territories, and the political and social changes that he caused.
It will then examine how the Congress of Vienna (1815) restored most (but not all) of the pre-Napoleonic Italian states, and tried to stifle democratic reforms.
It will include a brief description of the Italian states Moore visited:

Kingdom of Sardinia
Grand-duchy of Tuscany
Papal States
Duchy of Modena and Reggio
Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla
